806. Murroe

Nine miles (14 km) east of Limerick city, on the hillside of Murroe Village, is the modern Benedictine establishment, Glenstal Abbey. It is a Castellated nineteenth-century mansion that was once the family seat of the Barringtons (who founded Barrington's Hospital in Limerick city in 1820). The castle was taken over by the Benedictines in 1927 and transformed into a modern college run on traditional Benedictine lines. Among the beautiful structural features that have been preserved is a door, replica in stone of the Hiberno-Romanesque door-way of Killaloe Cathedral. The priory grounds are particularly beautiful in rhododendron time, when the hills are a blaze of colour.

807. Newcastle West

Newcastle West, a busy market town, is the centre of prosperous dairy country, with fishing, golf (9) and tennis. The town takes its name from a twelfth-century castle which stands in ruins in the park beside the Square. Built in 1184 for the Knights Templars, it later passed to the earls of Desmond. the building suffered much during centuries of wars, and the ruins show evidence of many rebuildings and alterations. The castle has two halls (both fifteenth century), one of which has been subdivided, but the other, the Desmond Hall, is still complete. It has ownership and serves as a cultural centre where concerts, recitals, exhibitions and lectures are held.
